conchy-p-argizConcepcion Argiz is a wife, mother, teacher and philanthropist. The Havana native came to the United States at the age of nine, preceding her parents by three years. In 1975, she graduated from FIU with a degree in education. For 10 years, as a teacher at Key Biscayne Elementary School, Argiz taught various grades, including kindergarten, first, second and fourth. She is an active member and supporter of many charitable organizations, including the Junior League of Miami; Guardian Angels of Jackson Hospital; the American Heart Association; the American Cancer Society;

Mercy Hospital Foundation; the Annual ABCD and Capital Campaign for the Archdiocese of Miami; and Drug Free Youth In Town – a nationally recognized, community-based substance abuse prevention program that focuses on recognizing and rewarding students who choose to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. She also serves as a leader for many educational institutions such as the College of the Holy Cross and the University of Miami. Recently, Argiz and her husband Tony, whom she met while they were both studying at FIU, were recognized by the United Way of Miami-Dade with the Tocqueville Award for Outstanding Philanthropy. The couple has three children – Carolina, Tony and Andy.

In 1972, Florida International University dedicated the Torch of Knowledge, Service and Understanding to the memory of the late Ernest R. Graham, the forward-thinking senator who championed the University’s creation. On FIU’s 25th anniversary, the FIU Alumni Association established the Torch Awards to honor successful individuals who have had a positive impact on their profession and the community.┬áThe alumni and faculty chosen to receive a Torch Award represent FIU’s finest, serving as torch bearers and leaders who inspire.
