Student Teachers Begin Their Journey

The 3-day student teaching orientation took place on August 20 – 22 at the FIU Football Stadium Club Room.  The student teachers attended a variety of sessions regarding their assignments and responsibilities, including an afternoon of conversation with their FIU Supervisors. Guest speakers from Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the College of Education presented a variety of topics, including: Ethics and Professional Conduct, Florida Standards, Classroom Management, Differentiated Instruction, and The Heart of Effective Instruction.  Dr. Reio and Katie Pereyra from Graduate Studies shared information about our graduate programs – and motivated the students to begin planning for their future educational opportunities.  A very special guest, Mr. Alex Lopes, Florida’s 2013 Teacher of the Year, National Teacher of the Year finalist, Instructional Supervisor for M-DCPS’s Prekindergarten Program for Children with Disabilities, and a current doctoral candidate here in the COE Special Education program, shared some of his unique and memorable experiences.  On Friday, the students enjoyed a “Celebration Luncheon,” followed by some inspiring and encouraging words from Drs. Garcia, Hasson, Perkins, and Miller.  In the afternoon, they attended a presentation (Banking in an Ever-changing Economy and Financial Environment), and reception hosted by Continental National Bank at the Frost Art Museum.  President Rosenberg joined us, shared some uplifting words of wisdom regarding our noble profession, and posed for many great pictures!  A happy time was enjoyed by all!   With much excitement and some anxiety, 118 very well-prepared student teachers began the student teaching journey on Monday, August 25th!
