5th Grade class from Miami Christian School learns with Students of Professor Eva Frank’s class

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Group

On Friday, February 8th, the students from Ms. Tatiana Hernandez’ 5th grade class at Miami Christian School visited FIU for the day. Ms. Hernandez, who is an FIU College of Education alumna, said the students were very excited but a little anxious as they were also scheduled to participate in a Kinesiology class with university students.

Upon early arrival to the College, they attended Professor Eva Frank’s PET 3325C U01 Spring 2013 class. In no time they bonded with the college students and were designing posters depicting parts of the shoulder to show off their new found knowledge. They also toured the campus, dined at Fresh Foods in the Graham Center, and attended their second class, a computer class, with Dr. Thirunarayanan.

At the end of their day, Dr. Deborah Hasson and Dr Maria L. Fernandez welcomed them on behalf of Dean Delia C. Garcia and distributed a goody bag to take home. The students had a hard time picking their favorite part of the day. One thing we do know is they enjoyed their day and we enjoyed having them. They all plan on attending FIU in 2020!

Habits of Mind Workshop

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012

The workshop flyer with additional details can be found here (PDF, opens in new window.)

A message from Delia C. Garcia, Dean of the College of Education:

Habits of Mind WorkshopOn Friday, January 4, 2013, Florida International University’s College of Education is sponsoring a one-day workshop on habits of mind. The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Arthur Costa, Emeritus Professor of Education at California State University, Sacramento and Co‐founder of the Institute for Intelligent Behavior in El Dorado Hills, California, and the Institute for Habits of Mind, and Dr. Bena Kallick, private school/work consultant, and Program Director at EduPlanet, Inc. for the design of social learning institutes for educators.

We want our students to be challenged by rigorous, cognitively demanding tasks. The content of those tasks is an important scaffold for fostering student thinking. Ultimately, we want our students to develop the life-long habits of mind that help them engage not only in the moment but to also engage in future, life-long learning. We cannot start soon enough—habits build over time and developmentally. (more…)
